The proposed immigration law, aimed at transposing the European pact on asylum and immigration, is a major threat to Prime Minister Bayrou and his government, potentially leading to its downfall. The executive is delaying the bill's implementation. A confluence of factors, including potential failures on pension reforms, political maneuvering, post-congress socialist opposition, budget deficits, and unpopular economic measures, exacerbate the situation. The law itself is problematic, and the public is weary of uncontrolled immigration. While the European pact may reduce migratory pressure, it will not solve the underlying issue. In 2024, 336,000 new residence permits were issued, primarily for students, with humanitarian permits seeing the largest increase. Immigration has become a key societal issue across Europe, prompting the EU's response.
